Early in the morning we arrive in the capital of Armenia, Yerevan, transfer to the hotel. After the rest, we make a 1.5-hour tour of the city center. We will visit the cascade, the opera house and through North Avenue we go to the Republic Square, in the heart of Armenia. Then departure to the fruit market. Here you can stroll around the fruit market and try dried fruits, nuts and sweets. Then we will visit the museum and memorial for the Armenian genocide in 1915. The highlight of the day is a visit to the cognac factory in Yerevan, where you can try some famous Armenian cognacs. The day ends in a beautiful Armenian restaurant with national music. (b/d)
Today we drive about 40 km outside Yerevan, where we visit the beautiful Geghard Monastery (1215) in the Kotayk region with cave churches, which were probably built in the rocks like pagan temples. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Here the Apostle Thaddeus hid a spear that pierced Jesus on the cross. In one cave church you can drink holy water, which has a miraculous effect. At the monastery we can taste many Armenian dishes offered by local residents. Then we go to the only surviving sunny temple of Garni, which was dedicated to God Mithra and was built in the Hellenistic style in the first century A.D. In jeeps we drive to the spectacular Azat Gorge, where we can admire the beautiful basalt columns. The local people call the natural monument a symphony of stones. After the visit, we will join a family in the village of Garni in the process of baking lavash bread (Armenian national flatbread) and try fresh bread right from the tandoor and enjoy a good lunch there. After lunch, we return to Yerevan. Here you have a great opportunity to visit the Museum of the History of Armenia, where you can find ancient finds of many millennia. (b/l)
After breakfast we drive to the Museum Matenadaran, where a collection of over 17,000 ancient manuscripts from various fields of Armenian science and culture and about 3000 foreign-language manuscripts are housed and exhibited. Afterwards we are going to Ejmiatsin city, the religious center of all Armenians, where is the oldest official church in the world, the Cathedral of St. Ejmiatsin, which was built in 303 and is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There we will visit another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Holy Hripsime Church (7th c.), where the relics of the holy Hripsimeh and another 32 nuns are buried. Afterwards we will have lunch in a nice restaurant at an art school where Armenian dishes will be served. On the way to the hotel in Yerevan, the road takes us to the house of the musician, duduk and piano player Karen Hakobyan, who will tell us how he makes this wind instrument from apricot wood and will play various Armenian flutes for us. His wife will also invite us for coffee or tea with sweets. (b/l/t)
In the early morning we will drive south through the Ararat Plain, Armenia's largest wine region and to the Khor Virap Monastery, behind which rises the sacred mountain of all Armenian Father Ararat and in front of which extends the Mother River Araks. In a deep dungeon, on the hill of the monastery, the first catholicos of Armenians Gregory the Illuminator has been closed for 13 years. The monastery has become a popular place of pilgrimage for locals and tourists alike. According to the tradition, Noah had cultivated the first grape vines on this valley after the Flood. And since then wine has been made in the country. on the we are going to a rugged, picturesque landscape, to Noravank. Visit the beautiful monastery (13-14th c.). On the way back, at the entrance of the gorge, we will visit the cave Areni 1, where archaeologists have uncovered settlement remains with about 6000 years old wine barrels and where 5500 to 6000 years old leather shoe was discovered. After a break for lunch and wine tasting with the locals, we head to the Syunik region, to Zorats Karer, also known as the "Stonehenge Armenia", the mysterious menhirs, where there is probably a 7000-year-old observatory. After a breakfast we drive to Khndsoresk, the cave settlement at the charming gorge, which can be reached by the swing bridge. The environment fascinates by the varying landscape scenarios. In the afternoon we explore the mighty Vorotan Gorge, at the abyss in an exposed position the monastery Tatev (9th century), there was a famous university in the Middle Ages. With the cable car "Wings of Tatev" (5.7 km) we will reach the monastery. Before the visit, we will enjoy local dishes with a family in the garden. Drive to Vayots Dsor. Overnight is in the village of Hermon or close to Yeghegnadsor. (b/l)
In the early morning our journey continues to Lake Sevan. The route takes us through the ancient Silk Road and over the Selim Pass, where the only surviving caravanserai from the 14th century will welcome us. Then our route leads across alpine meadows to the picturesque lake of Sevan, the "blue pearl" of Armenia. Visit of the cemetery in Noratus with its impressive cross stones and the beautifully situated Hajrawank church. In a pub on the lake we will eat fish grille and in case of a good weather, we will make a boat trip on the lake. Then drive to Dilijan, overnight is in Dilijan. (B/L/D)
Today we drive to the city of Vanadzor to pay a visit to a well-known master of cross-stones. There we will see how an important part of Armenian culture is made. Afterwards we drive north to the village of Haghbat, where the beautiful Haghbat Monastery sits on a hill. On the way to the monastery, we take a short break at the Sanahin Bridge, built in the late 12th century by Queen Vaneni in honor of her deceased husband. After the sightseeing we will drive to the Georgian border crossing, drive to Tbilisi, day off. (b/d)
Tbilisi is an interesting mixture of old and modern. We begin our tour with the Metekhi church (13th century) and walk through the beautiful streets of the old town to the synagogue and the Sioni Cathedral, Peace Bridge, visit the treasury in the Historical Museum. You marvel at the magnificent goldsmith's art from the time of the Golden Fleece in the treasury of the Historical Museum. Then We raise up to the Narikala castle (4th century), from where we walk with beautiful views of the city to the mosque and to the sulfur baths Abanotubani. (b/l)
Mtskheta, the old capital and religious center of Georgia (UNESCO World Heritage), is our first stop: visit the Jvari church (6th century). Drive over Gori, the hometown of Iosif Stalin to the cave city Uplisziche. Visit of the cave city Uplisziche from the 1. Millennium BC - The city complex with theaters and palaces is still easy to understand. After the sightseeing we drive to Borjomi, the town of famous mineral springs. (b/l)
Our trip is to the town of Akhalziche, where we will visit the beautiful Rabat Castle from the 12th century. The castle was built by Georgians, then from the 16th to the 19th century was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, in the 19th was under Russian authority and since 20th century. finally belongs to Georgia again. We follow the Mtkwari into the mountains of the Little Caucasus, where we will visit the fascinating cave city of Wardsia, which was built in the 12th century as a defensive system against the Seljuk Turks. More than 3000 cave dwellings were excavated from a slope of the Erusheti Hill, spread over 7 floors - the town also included a frescoed church, bakeries, a monastery, etc. Through steps and through corridors we get to know the fascinating city labyrinth. In the morning we drive towards Ananuri. The Fortress Ananuri is located on the Georgian military road, 70 km from Tbilisi where the small Vedzathevi River flows into Aragvi. Ananuri served as the main fortress for the Aragavian Eristaves, the rulers of this region. Then we drive to winter sports Gudauri, overnight. (b/d)
Our way passes the high peaks and deep gorges. Above the 2395 m altitude, we are going today to the famous mineral springs, where you can taste medicinal water. On a clear day we can see from here the Kasbeg, the highest mountain peak of Georgia. 4x4 drive to Gergeti Church. Drive back to Tbilisi. (b/d)
Today we explore the Kakheti wine-growing region on the southern slopes of the Caucasus, where the city of love is Signagi. You will also see the Bodbe Nunnery, where is the tomb of St. Nino, who preached Christianity in Georgia. Signagi was called the city of love because there the lovers can get married very quickly in the registry office. A fairytale city that enchants visitors with its beauty. The fortress in Signagi towers over the city. The construction of the fortress began during the reign of Queen Tamara in the 12th century and ended under Heraclius II in the 18th century. Once it had an area of about 40 hectares. Wine tasting at Telawi. Wine making in clay jugs is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
