We reach Yerevan in the early morning, the capital of Armenia, and transfer to the hotel. After you have a rest from the journey, take a 2-hour tour of the city center. A city tour gives you a first overview of this bustling, multi-faceted metropolis, built on the banks of the Hrazdan River and on the surrounding hills about 950-1,200 m above sea level. You will visit the cascade, the opera house and through Northern Avenue you will go to the Republic Square, the heart of Armenia. The Historical Museum awaits us here, providing a comprehensive overview of Armenian history, from prehistoric artifacts to pieces of jewelery of Armenian Church architecture to Armenian culture exhibits from the 19th century and ethnographic information. Then we go to the fruit market. Here you can stroll through the fruit market and taste dried fruits, nuts and sweet treats. Afterwards we drive to the memorial of the genocide of the Armenians which was accomplished by Ottomans and Young Turks between 1894 and 1923. The highlight of the day is a visit to the cognac factory in Yerevan, where you can taste some well-known Armenian cognacs. The day ends in a beautiful Armenian restaurant with national music. (b/d)
The UNESCO World Heritage Site rock monastery Geghard, with its churches partly carved into the volcanic rocks (12th-13th century), is one of the most beautiful monastery in the Caucasus. It is picturesquely embedded in the loosely wooded mountainsides at the bottom of the gorge of the river Azat. A hike takes us from the village of Goght to the Azat Gorge. There we can see the highest basalt columns of Armenia. From the canyon we ascend to the plateau to the sun temple of Garni from the Hellenistic period (1st century, reconstructed). We will listen to the sounds of Duduk in the temple, the Armenian national instrument. In the late afternoon, an Armenian family invites us to their house and welcomes us to dinner. Together we will bake lavash, which we can of course also taste afterwards. Driving time is approx. 2.5 hours (approx. 120 km). Tradition has it that the first Catholicos of Armenians were thrown here in a deep dungeon for 13 years. There is a thermal water, which is famous throughout Armenia. After a short rest in Dschermuk there is the possibility of a tour of the city center and the park. Here we can try the famous, differently tempered healing water for ourselves. After lunch we will go to Goris. The stone circles of Karahunj in Sisian are probably a prehistoric cult and astronomy site, a kind of Armenian Stonehenge, which gives archaeologists many puzzles today. Perched on a wind-exposed, treeless plateau, between bare mountain peaks, the many holes perforated at their tips as mythical witnesses from the 2nd Millennium BC. Hike: 3-4 hours of pure walking, approx. 7 km, -280 Hm descent / +450 Hm ascent. (b/l)

On the southern slope of the Aragats Mountains, whose volcanic peak rises about 50 km northwest of Yerevan to 4,095 m, you will hike from Kari Lich (3,200 m) to the Amberd fortress at over 2,300 m. This is one of the few feudal castles of Armenia that has been preserved as a ruin and is still today in archaic landscape along with its church perched on a valley.
